A Holistic Medicine Cabinet

by Dr. Kailey Fargo, D.C.

We are all very aware that winter and colder temperatures tend to breed more illness than the warm summer months. As this winter approaches, I am taking the time to stock my medicine cabinet in preparation for potential sickness, but it might look different than the traditional drugstore supplies. There are many more natural remedies that we choose to stock in our house and use when we or our child does not feel their best. Whether you need it now or this sparks inspiration in the future, these are the things we like to keep at the ready.

General immune support:

  • Vitamin C—try to incorporate whole foods like oranges or whole food supplements
  • Vitamin A—beef liver whole food or supplement
  • Vitamin D—pasture-raised eggs and raw dairy
  • Bone broth—homemade or store-bought from a good source
  • Fermented foods—sauerkraut, kombucha

Ear Infections/aches:

  • Garlic and mullein oil—to be used topically in the ear
  • Warm compress
  • Drainage massage
  • Essential oils—lavender and peppermint

Teething:

  • Hyland Naturals Homeopathic Oral Pain Relief
  • Essential oils—lavender and copaiba

Fevers:

  • Elderberry
  • Temperate bath
  • Homeopathy—Belladonna, and Bryonia
  • Essential oils—lavender and peppermint
  • Sinus congestion and cough:
  • Elderberry
  • Zarbee’s Cough and Mucus Syrup
  • Humidifier with peppermint oil
  • Raw honey

Sore throat:

  • Raw honey
  • Beekeeper’s Naturals lozenges and throat spray
  • Salt water gargle

These items listed above are purely recommendations to relieve symptoms, and strengthen the immune system and are not intended to cure any disease or disorder. The other noteworthy brand to add to this list is Genexa. They offer a cleaner option for those times that medication might be indicated or needed. They offer drugstore classics like acetaminophen, cough suppressants, and decongestants without dyes or additives. Sometimes these things are needed and it’s nice to have safe and clean options to use.

Here’s hoping for a healthy holiday season for you and your family!
