The Importance of Regular Chiropractic Checkups

Everyone understands, and few would dispute, the importance of regular dental checkups. Similarly, most people also understand that it’s important to take your car in for routine maintenance. They don’t do either of those things because their teeth hurt or their car is acting up in some way. Rather, they undertake these activities because they have learned, or been taught, that doing so saves pain and money down the road. Similarly, if you really want to get the most out of life, then you should undertake to proactively evaluate various aspects of your function and performance before your body breaks down and forces you to act.

All of this is predicated on a particular viewpoint about how one approaches the subject of health and wellness. There are some who will only act when the body forces them to. Unfortunately, what this means is that this group of people often wait far too long to be evaluated and treated. The result is that they often end up with permanent damage or disease processes that could easily have been prevented. On the flipside, one could take the approach that by identifying issues in the body before they become acute, one maintains overall better function and health. You come in on a regular basis. We check you and identify any areas that don’t function well. We fix those areas that don’t function well. You go on to live a life of greater health and better performance. It’s really pretty simple.

We could view this as “maintenance”, but I view it in a much more active light. I would say that people who undertake regular chiropractic checkups are doing more than just maintaining. Rather, they are “creating” health that they otherwise would not experience. Chiropractic care improves functioning of the joints throughout the body and, most importantly, the way the nervous system is capable of communicating. You must realize that you are living your entire life through your nervous system and anything that prevents it from functioning as well as it should, will negatively impact your life and your health. If we can keep you moving and communicating more effectively, then you will perform better, resist injury, and recover more quickly when you push your body to its limits.

The name of the game of life is not simply to passively wait until things happen to you. The game is to do everything that you can to push the limits of what your body and mind are capable of and, as you age, to bend the inevitable curve of downward function. In 42 years of practice, I can honestly say that I’ve never met a person who I felt would not benefit from regular chiropractic checkups.
