The 10 Benefits of Chiropractic Care
By Dr. Tim Fargo, Chiropractor
Chiropractic, as a discipline, is something that I have loved and appreciated for almost 50 years. I thought I would take a moment to delineate the 10 most prominent benefits of chiropractic care.
1) You will have less pain. There are numerous studies on, for example, the relief of lower back pain with chiropractic care. Those studies have shown that chiropractic care is superior to drugs and other conservative forms of care, specifically for lower back pain. I would also observe that this phenomenon is not limited to lower back pain but covers such things as neck pain, headaches, pain in the extremities, mid back pain, and a host of other conditions. Chiropractic care relieves pain because it eliminates the source of irritation in the joints.
2) You will perform better. Whether it is that you are a professional or elite athlete, or simply need to carry a bag of groceries into your house or get up and down off the toilet, chiropractic care will help you do those things at a higher level. You will perform better because your joints, nerves and muscles will do what they are supposed to do, when they are supposed to do it. I spent 15 years with the Minnesota Vikings as their personal chiropractor. They came to me because they hurt, but the smart ones also came because they knew that they performed better every Sunday on the field.
3) You will be less susceptible to injury. When parts of your body are not working as they are supposed to, the body, in its brilliance, will always compensate; certain muscles will tighten while others will be inhibited in their firing. As you continue to use the body vigorously, these areas of compensation reach a point of overload and then, seemingly in a random fashion, you get hurt. The apparency is that you did something to injure yourself. The actuality is that you were already compromised because of your compensation, and then you got injured.
4) You will recover more quickly. When your body is well tuned and all the parts are doing what they are supposed to do, then you will function more efficiently and it will take less time for you to recover when you do a hard workout or exertion. When you recover more quickly, you can push your body harder and more consistently, and that leads to increased fitness.
5) Your digestive system will work better. The nerves for your various digestive organs derive from different parts of your spine. For example, your stomach derives nerve supply from the upper neck and the middle of your back. If you have misalignments in either of those areas, then the nerve flow to the stomach will be compromised and you will not digest your food as well. The same principle applies to every one of the digestive organs.
6) You will be less depressed and anxious. It may sound strange that chiropractic invades and impacts the arena of brain chemistry, but it most definitely does. When you have chronic stress, it activates the stress response in the brain. Chronic activation of the stress response reduces serotonin and melatonin production, therefore chronically stressed people don’t sleep well, and they are depressed and anxious. Chiropractic care reduces stress on the body and therefore counteracts the impact of chronic stress; serotonin and melatonin levels rise, and the rest follows.
7) Your immune system will work more efficiently. Anything that reduces stress on the body will benefit your immune response. Because chiropractic care reduces physical stress on the body, it also allows your immune system to better combat foreign agents. You simply won’t get sick as much when you are under chiropractic care.
8) The functioning of your reproductive system will improve. The reproductive system includes both the external and internal parts, and the hormones that regulate and drive their functioning. Everything from erectile dysfunction to hormone imbalances that impact fertility can be impacted by improving the way the nervous system works; and that is what chiropractic does.
9) You will experience “Health Extension”. Longevity really has two parts; there is life extension and then there is health extension. Life extension is how many years you live, but health extension is how much health you have in the years you live. I don’t think anyone would disagree that living a long life is not the only thing that matters, if the last third of it sees you in poor health. Chiropractic care, because it accomplishes everything that we’ve stated above, adds life to your years.
10) You will live longer. When you add all the above factors together and sprinkle in vigorous exercise and good nutrition, the result is a longer life. Not only that, but you will bend the aging curve as well. The aging curve describes how function declines with age. It is inevitable that we do decline and that we do finally die, but the shape of the curve and how rapidly it declines can be dramatically influenced by how we live and how we care for ourselves. The simple truth is that you will live longer and better when you are under chiropractic care. Come and get some!
