Customized Postural Analysis and Correction

Improve Posture With The Help Of Chiropractic BioPhysics

by Dr. Tim Fargo, Chiropractor

Does it matter whether you have good posture, or is it just something that your mother nagged you about to irritate you? As with most things in life, your mother was correct. It matters because good posture allows the joints in your spine to move properly, it prevents degeneration with time and enables you to look and feel young well into your senior years. You know how it is – you see a young person who stands with a hunched posture, and you wonder whether there is something wrong with them. Conversely, you see an older person who stands upright and moves with some grace, and you marvel at their apparent youthfulness. Don’t get me wrong, it is not just about aesthetics and “looking good”, but those things are a reflection of more profound structural and functional issues. If posture matters, then we should have a way to accurately measure it, and we should also have a way of predictably improving it. Chiropractic Biophysics is just such a methodology. The discipline, a separate study within the chiropractic profession, originated in the 1970s and 80s and has as its stated goal to identify, correct, and improve structural abnormalities in the spine resulting in improved posture, function, and health.

Chiropractic Biophysics uses customized postural analysis that employs visual and computerized postural assessment as well as x-ray analysis to identify both global and localized postural/structural issues. For example, it may be that you or someone you know suffers from scoliosis (a sideways curvature of the spine when viewed from the front or the back). Or it may be that they have a hunched type of posture with an increased curve in their mid and upper back and with their head projecting out in front of them. These are just the most prominent examples of postural alterations that can have a significant impact on health and function. Doctors who employ Chiropractic Biophysics methodologies are capable of accurately identifying these distortions and then devising interventions to improve and correct them.  The doctors at Chiropractic Health and Wellness are all trained and certified in Chiropractic Biophysics. We use a number of different methods to improve posture and spinal structure. The way to think about what we do is with the acronym “E A T”.

“E” stands for “exercise”. We recommend exercises that are a mirror image of the postural distortion that the person has. These exercises are designed to strengthen postural muscles to enable you to stand, sit, and move more easily. “A” stands for “adjustments”. We employ specific adjustments to the spine and other joints to counteract or counterbalance the postural/structural abnormality. “T” stands for “traction”. The final piece of the puzzle in Chiropractic Biophysics is specific mirror image traction which allows us to influence the connective tissue (ligaments and discs) that are holding your spine in a particular posture. When we employ this potent triad of tools the person’s posture changes and their health improves. At Chiropractic Health and Wellness, we combine Chiropractic Biophysics with other methods that are more directed at spinal and extremity joint function to improve human health and performance. There may be 2500 chiropractors in the Twin Cities, but there are only a handful who are familiar with, and fewer yet who are certified practitioners of, Chiropractic Biophysics. If you think that you or someone you know could benefit from customized postural analysis and correction, then the doctors at Chiropractic Health and Wellness are here to serve.
